How do bans work?

I haven't botted for years, but I am interested in maybe botting on a secondary account to level combat for pvp. If you get banned for botting on a secondary account, will your main get banned as well? Does Jagex IP ban? Do I need to use a VPN if I bot?

If both are accounts are on at the same time,same ip and sharing the same jagex files,there is a possibility that they both can be banned.VPNs are ban magnates dont use them proxies are fine though.
